Honda offers two crossover models that should be on the short list of any shopper looking for a subcompact or mid-size transport. The HR-V was recently refreshed and now boasts one of the longest lists of standard features on any vehicle in its segment. The popular CR-V continues a long history of success, and it's larger and contains more usable space than just about any other competing model.

The new 2019 HR-V gets a welcome restyling on the exterior, a new center screen system with upgraded capabilities, and standard Honda Sensing. The 2018 Honda CR-V was completely redesigned in 2017 and carries over unchanged for the current year, but those who haven't driven one lately will appreciate the recent changes including the longer wheelbase and wider stance that gives drivers more confidence when traveling over uneven terrain. Both vehicles seat four or five comfortably and are suitable for long-distance trips. Read on to get more information about these two models.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2019 Honda HR-V is powered by a 1.8L four cylinder engine that produces 141 horsepower. That doesn't sound like much, but this vehicle is nimble around the turns, gets excellent fuel efficiency, and can be parked in the tiniest of spaces. The suspension is well-tuned, and handling is all but effortless. Buyers can choose a continuously variable transmission or a six-speed manual. The manual transmission is available only with the front-wheel drive option, and the CVT can be ordered with either front- or all-wheel drive. The 2018 Honda CR-V base trim is powered by a 2.4L four-cylinder engine rated at 184 horsepower, and front-wheel drive and CVT is standard. The uplevel EX gets a turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 190 horsepower. The CR-V gets better acceleration than the HR-V because of the turbocharged power.

Interior Design and Utility

Many buyers tend to think that all compact crossovers and SUVs are cramped on the inside, and that's understandable. However, the 2019 Honda HR-V is designed with a quite useful interior, and passengers will love the position and size of the cubbies and pockets. Visibility is fantastic, and the amount of cargo space is impressive once the rear seats are folded. The volume area is boxy, with no sharp contouring from bottom to top. Standard features on the base trim include a 7-inch screen display, smartphone app integration, and a rearview camera. The 2018 CR-V also boasts a good amount of cargo space, and owners really like the rear hatch opening controls that vary the amount of opening height. Standard features include automatic climate control, cruise control, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, and a color LCD dash display. Uplevel trims add on satellite radio, an upgraded screen display, smartphone app integration, and dynamic guidelines on the rearview camera display.

Safety Features

Both the 2019 Honda HR-V and 2018 CR-V come with antilock brakes, precision-tuned suspension, electronic stability control, and a full set of airbags. The Honda Sensing suite of driver aids is included on the uplevel trims as is the Honda LaneWatch passenger side camera. The 2018 CR-V LX doesn't come with the driver aid package, but all other trims are equipped with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

These two models are extremely affordable yet pack in the features you'd expect in a more expensive crossover. Test drive both of them at Honda of Chantilly, and call the dealership ahead of time to inquire about current 2018-2019 inventory on all trims.
