The 2018 Honda Pilot is a mid-size SUV. Having the same body type, the 2018 Toyota Highlander can be purchased for just over $31,000. Both vehicles have solid capabilities, but the Pilot is more versatile partly because of a 4WD system that comes with the Intelligent Variable Torque Management. Although it's a close contest, the Honda Sensing beats the Toyota Safety Sense P in accident-prevention technology.
Powertrain
Every 2018 Honda Pilot is powered by a 3.5 L engine that's rated at 280 hp. Controlled by the patented i-VTEC technology, this V6 engine yields just above 260 lb-ft of torque. Considered a base trim, the 2018 Toyota Highlander LE runs on a 2.7 L engine with four cylinders. This small engine can't generate more than 185 hp. Nevertheless, the other editions are available with a six-cylinder engine that offers a peak output of 295 hp and just more than 260 lb-ft of torque. Standard in the Pilot, the Variable Cylinder Management isn't matched by anything in the Highlander. This Honda SUV is also controlled by the Active Control Engine Mount and Eco Assist. Sound in the powertrain is muzzled by the Active Noise Cancellation.
Handling
You can install the Intelligent Variable Torque Management AWD in any 2018 Pilot model. As the name suggests, this technology delivers variable torque to the front and rear axles. Optimized for off-road cruising, the Intelligent Traction Management improves the handling of this versatile Honda SUV on any terrain. This highly responsive mechanical module is tuned to handle snow, mud and sand. The Hill Start Assist helps the Pilot climb uneven terrains and sloped roads. Designed for normal driving, a six-speed automatic transmission system is available in both models. Paired with paddle shifters, a nine-speed automatic transmission system is installed in the Pilot Touring and Elite. In the Toyota Highlander, you have access to a maximum of eight gear settings in the Direct Shift automatic transmission. A shift-by-wire mechanism further improves the responsiveness of the Pilot's gearbox. Both vehicles are fitted with power-assisted vented brakes on the front wheels.
Safety
The front side airbags in the 2018 Honda Pilot include the SmartVent technology that prevents collisions between the driver and an adjacent passenger. You won't find such cutting-edge passive safety features any of the Toyota Highlander models. If you plan on going on a long drive in the Pilot, perhaps it's best to turn on the Adaptive Cruise Control that makes automatic adjustments according to traffic movement. The Dynamic Radar Cruise Control can also keep the Highlander moving at a safe distance to another car. The Pilot's Collision Mitigation Braking is comparable to the Highlander's Pre-Collision technology. However, the Road Departure Mitigation and LaneWatch are some driving aides that aren't available in any Toyota vehicles. Both SUVs have sensors that thoroughly scan all of the driver's real-time blind spots on the highway.
