If you're shopping for a compact or subcompact crossover this season, make sure to put Honda's outstanding offerings at the top of your list. The Honda HR-V has been a huge hit since its introduction in 2016, providing a fun-to-drive sedan alternative with plenty of amenities and tons of cargo space. The Honda CR-V is consistently one of the top-selling small SUVs on the market and has been fully redesigned for 2017. Here's how the HR-V and CR-V compare to one another.

Performance

The 2018 Honda HR-V is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 141 horsepower, paired with either a standard six-speed manual transmission or optional continuously variable automatic. With the manual, you'll get an EPA-estimated 25/33* city/highway mpg or 28/34* with the CVT, making these an ideal vehicle for drivers who want to save at the gas pump. Reviewers note the car's agility and precise, responsive steering.

The base model of the 2017 CR-V is equipped with a 184-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, or a turbocharged 1.5-liter 190-hp four-cylinder for the other trims. Both engines are paired with a CVT; the base gets 26/32** city/highway mpg while the turbo gets 28/34**.

Interior

The redesigned 2017 CR-V offers a refined, well-appointed cabin on par with that of some luxury class vehicles. The base model is equipped with automatic climate control, a five-inch display screen with integrated Bluetooth and rearview camera, and a USB port. Upgrade to higher trims for a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. You'll be ready for a weekend trip with 39.2 cubic feet of cargo room, expanding to 5.8 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded.

The 2018 HR-V is also lauded for its sophisticated, elegant layout, though rear seat passengers will have a bit less room than in the CR-V. However, it also features Honda's unique Magic Seat, able to fold in four separate configurations to accommodate a bike, luggage, furniture, or even a kayak. It includes the same tech features on the base model as the CR-V and can also be upgraded to a seven-inch touchscreen.
