Over the past couple of years, Honda Civics have become more sophisticated than ever: with advanced technologies that are typically expected on larger or luxury-oriented vehicles. Sticking to its prestige of high-level reliability, performance, engineering, ride quality, and environmental awareness, the 2018 Honda Civic is also available as an Si, which is one of the two available high-performance variants.
Performance
Over the years, the Honda Civic has built a reputation for providing sporty, athletic performance. That is primarily due to small but sprightly engines, which belie their size with loads of power primed for quick and effective acceleration. For the 2018 model year, the regular Civic trims share two engines: a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (K20C2), which provides 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque; and a 1.5-liter turbocharged I4 (L15B7), which produces up to 174 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque depending on trim. The transmissions available are a 6-speed manual transmission and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Primed for sporty performance, the Si variant is powered by the L15B7, which is tweaked to produce 205 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque and is tied to nothing else apart from a 6-speed manual transmission for ultimate control over gear shifting. A MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension is tuned to handle bumps and other road imperfections by shielding you and other occupants from turbulence. Dual-pinion variable-radio electric power steering keeps turning and cornering sharp and precise. And four-wheel power-assisted disc brakes ensure that when you press the brake pedal, you come to a quick and safe stop.
Fuel Economy
The small engines, combined with transmissions that don’t zap a lot of fuel, ensure that the 2018 Honda Civic is one of the most fuel-efficient compact vehicles in the market. The CVT, more specifically, does away with the energy-consuming gear shifting mechanism of traditional transmissions, thus making driving smoother and more efficient. City fuel economy peaks at 32 mpg, while highway fuel economy maxes out at 42 mpg*. Although the Honda Civic Si offers a slightly lower fuel economy, it still provides an impressive 28 city and 38 highway mpg**.
Safety
The 2018 Honda Civic—whether in regular or Si form—is one of the safer compact cars in the market.
