The 2018 Honda Civic is a mid-size sedan that offers great value in performance and digital technology. The 2018 Toyota Corolla is a compact sedan that's also economical. Under the hood, the Civic boasts much more muscle power than the Corolla. This Honda also has intelligent safety features that are powered by the Honda Sensing technology. Similarly, the Corolla carries the Toyota Safety Sense P suite that includes multiple driving aides.

Performance

The 2018 Civic LX and EX trims pack a 2.0 L engine that yields approximately 160 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque. Marked with the legendary i-VTEC label, this four-cylinder engine uses a multi-point fuel injection. Having a displacement of only 1.5 L, the turbocharged engine is capable of generating about 175 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. Designed to achieve a maximum output of 140 hp, the Toyota Corolla's 1.8 L I-4 engine doesn't come close to competing with the Civic's powertrain. This versatile Honda sedan also offers two versions of a continuously variable transmission system. If you prefer the feel of a clutch, then opt for a classic manual transmission that includes six gears. The Corolla offers a six-speed manual transmission or the Continuously Variable Transmission with intelligence and Shift Mode.

Safety

When an accident seems unavoidable, the 2018 Civic's Collision Mitigation Braking System applies the brakes. Automatic braking is also included in the Adaptive Cruise Control. The Low-Speed Follow technology precisely calculates the following distance in real time. Another accident-prevention feature in this Honda sedan is the Lane Keeping Assist. If the Civic suddenly swerves off track, the Road Departure Mitigation System will come on. The Lane Departure and Honda LaneWatch give you extra guidance for making smooth lane changes. Equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense P, the Corolla matches some of the active safety features that are part of the Honda Sensing technology. For example, the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection overrides the brakes if there's a high risk of a forward crash. Nevertheless, the Civic still comes out on top in terms of overall driving assistance on the highway.

Technology

Featuring an electrostatic finish, a 7.0-inch touch screen is standard in the 2018 Civic EX and higher trims. This responsive monitor offers quick access to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You may also turn on wireless Bluetooth to activate an SMS messaging function and hands-free calling. Rated at 1.5 amps, a USB port is available to charge smartphones and other mobile gadgets. In the Toyota Corolla, the Entune multimedia system also comes with a 7.0-inch touch screen and GPS navigation that receives traffic feeds from HD Radio. The Civic's navigation platform is connected to Honda HD Digital Traffic. Both sedans have HD Radio, SiriusXM Satellite Radio and auxiliary jacks for audio input. Standard in the Civic Touring, a 10-speaker sound system releases up to 450 watts of acoustic waves. The Corolla's modest audio system only has a total of six speakers.
