Those numbers, paired with the unbelievably frugal 31/40/40 MPG city/hwy/combined1 fuel rating with the CVT, make the Civic an all-around mechanical work-of-art that will thrill you on the road and avoid gas stations. The Corolla’s standard offering undoubtedly falls short. The 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine meekly offers 132 horsepower and 128 lb.-ft. of torque, and it doesn’t overtake the Civic in efficiency to make up for it either, since it only manages 28/36/32 MPG city/hwy/combined2.

You can upgrade to the Corolla’s second engine, a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder, but it doesn’t provide much more get-up-and-go beneath the accelerator. It maxes out at 140 horsepower and 126 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2017 Civic, on the other hand, can have its standard engine tuned to sing at an impressive 174 horsepower and 167 lb.-ft. of torque for some extra vigor on slow mornings! And the fuel efficiency even improves on the Civic, increasing to 32/42/26 MPG city/hwy/combined1, an impressive feat that the Corolla certainly cannot cop to.

When everyone takes a seat inside the cabins of these two vehicles, they’ll have plenty of elbow room. The 2017 Corolla provides 97.1 cubic ft. of space, which the Civic trumps with its own 97.8, but they both offer an enjoyable amount of comfortable room. Where you will notice a significant difference is in the trunk: the Civic offers a plentiful 15.1 cubic ft. of room3, whereas the Corolla only gives you 13 cubic ft. of area4, which may force you to leave some things behind when your cabin is full of passengers.
